Jim Kirkpatrick
Mr. Jim Kirkpatrick is in his 27th year of teaching and is a founding faculty member at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Morganton, NC. He previously taught at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, and also West Forsyth and North Forsyth High Schools in Winston-Salem. Bands under his direction have consistently earned Superior ratings at North Carolina Music Performance Adjudication events while performing Grade IV through Masterworks programs. His marching bands have enjoyed success at events across NC, SC and VA over the years, including numerous "Grand Champion" titles, and 1st place caption rankings. During his tenure at West Forsyth High School, the Wind Ensemble was featured at the 2011 North Carolina Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, and again in 2014 with the Jazz Ensemble.
He earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has regularly conducted bands at the UNCG Summer Music Camp since 2002. During his time at UNCG Mr. Kirkpatrick was awarded a residential fellowship at The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts to collaborate with performing artists and public schools across the Greater Washington DC area. He is Director Emeritus of the Asheville Community Band and enjoys a busy schedule serving as guest conductor and adjudicator for honor band events, music festivals and marching band competitions across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Mr. Kirkpatrick has twice served on the Board of Directors for the Northwest North Carolina Bandmasters Association and previously served as Secretary for the North Carolina Bandmasters Association from 2016-2020. Mr. Kirkpatrick is the current President of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. He has been selected by his colleagues for several honors and recognitions, including the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Band Director of the Year in 2006 and the Northwest District “Award of Excellence” in 2011. He was inducted into the American School Band Directors Association in June 2012 and was also recognized as a Grammy Educator Quarterfinalist in the same year.
